Episode 4 – How to Stay Positive on a Film Set?

Each and every time I have been on a film set there is a lot of gossip going on. It is the perfect place for people of all traits and origins to engage in the most prolific gossip you can ever imagine.

– The food is not good enough
– The weather too hot
– The working hours too long
– Another guy got a part that this guy wanted so that guy must suck

There is so much negativity, it is incredible!

Throughout all of this, you need to stay as positive as you can.

1. Avoid people that are too negative

Some people are negative all of the time. They can really draw you out. Drain your energy. After talking to them it will be so hard to start the next scene filled with enthusiasm. Avoid people like that as good as you can. Be polite and find a different spot to sit.

2. Find people that have a positive mindset and engage with them

While there is a lot of negativity going on, there are people that keep up the light. You can find them. Engage them. Talk to them and get new ideas from them.

3. Find something new to learn

The time you have on set is valuable. There are so many people around you that can and are willing to teach you something. You can use the set and the waiting time on set to your advantage. Do something useful for yourself and for your own mind. Read a book. Take your Kindle with you. Engage people that are better than you and learn from them. If they are fighters, you can ask them to show you some tricks. You can create your own stunt reel on set while waiting for the next scene to start.

4. Keep in mind all the positive things going on around you.

Everybody on set is trying their best to make it happen. You can see people working non-stop, giving their time and energy for what they love. It is your responsibility as actor to stay positive and make their lives easier, not harder, by doing the best job you can.

Stay positive and see you next time!
